The Bee Blog bio picture

Welcome to The Bee Blog

Hello and welcome to The Bee Blog. Here you will find all of the latest happenings at Melissa Laudick Photography, including sneak peaks of recent sessions, new products and maybe even a glimpse into my personal life. Sit back and enjoy, and be sure to check back regularly. Also, feel free to "add some buzz" by leaving a comment or "spread the pollen" by emailng a post to a friend!

A bit about the bee...I contacted Ashley for a new logo and brand concept. I wanted something whimsical, colorful and fun. So she came up with the idea of a honey bee because Melissa means "honey bee." Very clever! So I'd like to think of this cute little honey bee as the mascot for Melissa Laudick Photography. You'll see him buzzing around here a lot!

Thanks for stopping by,

Melissa

brother and sister

This is a session, unfortunately, like many of my sessions, that I failed to blog about.  This little guy just had a birthday so in honor of his first year, there is no better time than now to blog about it. Besides, his mom follows my blog so I thought she deserved a little trip down memory lane.

img_5210_2_2Another reason I felt the need to blog about this session was to showcase this sweet little brother/sister relationship.  My Lily will soon be a big sister to a little brother and I can only hope that she is as sweet as this big sister.  As a big sister gift this little girl got a camera when her brother was born and she was right by my side during the photo session. I couldn’t help but want to capture her in action so I asked her to get “that angle” while I shot from  another angle. Here are the results….notice the crown, tutu, and last, but not least the ever adorable home-made Fruit Loop necklace…

she then paused and decided something was missing….

she added a few things…

…and went back to work.  Precious!

Kim - I'm sure Lily will be a wonderful big sister. With her kind heart and generous spirit, her baby brother will be truly blessed! :) Happy 1st birthday to Jameson -- and what a cute big sister!

happy halloween

I was a little stumped as to what Lily should dress up as this year.  Our first plan was a monkey.  In the store she loved the costume and held it right in the front of the cart with her.  She kept saying “ooo….ooo…ooo.” Well once we got it home and attempted to try it on, she wanted nothing to do with it.  She was scared of it.  If it was laying on the floor she would go 3 feet out of the way just to avoid it.  So, plan B was…

a disco/go-go dancer.  I bought a crazy 70’s style dress at a second hand store months ago.  I borrowed the wig from my friend Kristin.  Unfortunately Lily was afraid of the wig too! She wanted nothing to do with it, but once we put her hat on I took an opportunity to slip the wig over her hat without her even knowing.  It lasted a good hour and a half before she noticed it.

img_4908I was also planning to make little faux leather leg warmers to go over her shoes to make them look like go-go boots, but my sewing machine is in the shop.

Kristin - Miss!!!! I love the go-go dancer look and great job on slipping the wig on over the hat :^D. TOO CUTE! xoxo

Kim - OH MY WORD!!! I can't believe she kept the wig on -- she's a trip and a half! And the dress -- too much! Molly wants to know if "Baby Lily can eat candy yet?" Oh how we love and miss you guys so!

18 months

My baby turned a year and a half last week so since the weather was chilly, but at least nice today we got outside for a few photos.

img_4460_2img_4426_2img_4439_2img_4444_2In the mornings, when I work at the hospital we walk Lily over to our neighbor’s house a few doors down.  One morning she was carrying her little purse and holding her daddy’s hand.  My heart melted and I thought to myself, I need to get a picture of that.  Well, at 7am it’s a little dark so we took the opportunity tonight.  The purse was one of my recent sewing projects.  I don’t know if it’s motherhood or what, but I’ve been all domestic lately and wanting to learn new skills.  My current project is a baby quilt for Lily’s new baby brother due in February.  I’m also taking a knitting class, so hopefully this winter I’ll put that new skill to good use!

img_44161

img_4419She’s so funny.  When we are getting ready to go somewhere she says, “shoes…hat…coat…” and she’ll hold out her little arm so I can slide the purse on it. It’s great for holding a few little toys for our outings.

Kristin - this sequence of pictures is so darn sweet, miss....you certainly do know how to capture a moment. and that purse is so cute! you have definitely turned into a domestic goddess :^D.

Meghann - She is too cute! She is going to be a girly girl just like Caroline. Jameson is turning one on Thursday-I can't believe it. You will love seeing your little girl be a big sister to a baby boy, trust me, it's amazing.

Catching up

I’m behind on blogging and my new goal is to update weekly.  So here are a few pictures of a familiar face on my blog, Hudson, who turned one this summer.

teeth

When you ask Lily to show you her teeth, this is the response you get….

img_3747_2img_3783_2Seriously love that girl!  Here are a few more…

Melissa - We miss you too Kim! Lily starts at a new babysitter's next week. I know she will be fine, but it still makes me nervous and apprehensive. Wish you were still here!!

Kim H. - Okay, is there anything cuter than those little white chicklet teeth? My favorite is her dragging the watering can with that cute little face. That child is surely not lacking in the personality department. Oh, how I miss you guys!

Lily fix

This post is for Kim, Lily’s first, former and favorite babysitter who moved to Memphis in June.  Kim’s been needing a “Lily fix” so I thought I’d share a few recent pictures.  Lily is rather hard to photograph these days because she is on the go, but since these pictures are from a month ago, it’s a reminder for me to get my camera out more often for all the little things.

By the way, Lily has a  very important announce to make….she’s going to be a big sister in February!!

img_2711_2img_2699_2img_2713_2

Kim H. - Okay, well that child is well loved because when I announced that you had recent pictures of Lily up, the entire gang came running -- well, everyone except Miss Molly. She's sleeping. John and Patrick said "aaaawwwwwww!!!" Leo said "oh, her face has changed -- she looks so big!" Maddy says "awwww, she's so cute! I miss her!" And I say that I want to put her on a cracker! I can't stand it! She looks so big to me! It really hasn't been that long, but boy, they change when you don't see them every week. Smooch her up for me -- and rub le bebe for us! Hugs to you all!

Dodging the rain

This session was for a family with some who came as far as DC.  There were rain showers expected throughout the weekend, but with some “dry” times.  We watched weather.com for hour to hour updates and switched out session time to earlier in the afternoon when there was supposed to be a break in the rain.  As I drove to the home of the grandparents, where are session was taking place, I drove through the biggest downpour of the day.  Luckily we were all patient and waited about 45 minutes, the rain stopped and provided us with a nice cool, cloudy afternoon…perfect for photos.  Here are a few photos because I know this family is anxious to see their gallery which should be up later tonight.

Toby & Tatem - Thank you for posting these! We can't wait to see more! If they are anything like these, we'll be thrilled! =)

So expressive

Lily and I met this little girl and her mommy at the Gymboree play classes last winter.  Since then we’ve enjoyed play dates, trips to COSI, and the zoo.  She turned one in June so we celebrated the special occasion with a photo shoot.  Here are a few of my favorites.  She is one of the most expressive little girls I have ever met…I love her little facial expressions!  I also love getting pictures of the parents with their babies.  At first, most of the parents try to shy away from the camera, but I strongly encourage some pictures together.  In my opinion there can never be too many images to show the sweet, loving relationship and often times it’s the mother that is behind the camera and never in the pictures.

13 days old

Last week I had a newborn session with Baby B who was 13 days old. I had never met this family, but from the minute I walked through the door I felt very welcome.  Everyone was relaxed, talkative and ready for whatever I had in store.  The mom and I had a connection because we are both nurses on bone marrow transplant units, her with adults and me with children. As usual, I’m not quite finished with editing, so here is a sneak peek for mom and dad. I have a lot of favorites from this session so it was hard for me to narrow it down.

Little Baby B:

img_2209_2Now, as I edit a session certain images just beg to be in black and white, but I tend to like most of my images in color. This session was different, for some reason I found that I liked a lot of them better as black and white.  I’m not sure why, maybe there just seemed to be more emotion in the image which I tend to like better in b&w.  Here are some of my favorite b&w:

video

This is the first time I’ve attempted to load a video for others to view…I admit technology is not my specialty!  There is probably an easier way to do this, but non-the-less it’s there for viewing.

On this particular day, I was on my computer and looked down at my side to see Gretta, my dog, covered with kitchen towels.  I had to run and get the camera.  Gretta may be a little high energy at times, but she really is sweet with Lily.  I’m looking forward to watching Lily grow up with her little canine friend. I have a feeling Gretta will be subjected to a few dress up parties in her future!

Just click on the link below to see the video.

Lily and Gretta

Kim H. - I CAN'T STAND IT!!! That was just adorable! And what a patient, good doggy -- with her little, wagging tail. So precious. And at the same time it makes me miss Lily already.... :(
